The discipline of Management Science and Engineering was developed in the Department of Management Science and Engineering. Founded in 1979, it is one of the earliest departments specialized in management science in China. The department was begun to enroll graduate students in 1979; was authorized to confer a Ph.D. degree in 1986 and offer a postdoctoral program in 1998. It was accredited as a key discipline in ZhejiangProvince in 1999 and as a national key discipline in 2007.

The Department of Management Science and Engineering has 27 faculty members, with 8 full professors, 12 associate professors, and 6 lecturers, among whom one is an academician of China Academy of Engineering and two winners of New Century Talent Program of National Ministry of Education. The department consists of two research institutes, namely, the Institute of Management Science and Information Systems, and the Institute of Management Engineering. The researches are mainly focused on information management and e-commerce, high-tech entrepreneurship and behavioral decision-making, industrial engineering, technology and innovation management, supply chain, logistics and optimization management, neuromanagement, management of science & technology policy, and Engineering Education. Since 2005, the department has undertaken 34 key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Philosophy and Social Sciences Foundation of China. More than 100 research papers have been published in key journals worldwide in the past five years, some of which have been indexed by SCI, EI, and SSCI.

Supported by the department and the national key discipline, National Institute of Innovation Management (NIIM) of ZhejiangUniversity has become one of the top academic institutions in the field of innovation management.

The neuromanagement laboratory is the first across discipline institution of neuromanagement and neuroeconomics research in China. The research group has been making significant achievements in satisfying the national demands.
